[글로벌 CEO] 페이팔 중국 온라인 금융 인수, 댄 슐만(Schulman)의 승부수… 알리바바와 전면전

세계 최대의 온라인 결제업체인 미국 페이팔이 외국 기업으로서는 처음으로 중국의 결제 서비스 시장에 뛰어들었다.

중국 인민은행은 최근 페이팔이 중국의 온라인 결제 업체 고페이의 지분 70%를 인수하는 것을 승인했다. 중국이 외국 금융회사의 중국 기업 지분 인수를 50% 넘어 인수하도록 허용한 것은 이번이 처음이다.
미중 무역협상 1단계합의 이후 중국의 금융개방이 실제 정책으로 옮겨진 첫 케이스이다. 중국 인민은행은 최근 국내 금융서비스 산업 개방 확대의 일환으로 외국 결제 기업들의 중국 내 투자를 허용하겠다고 발표한 바 있다. 비자와 마스터카드 등이 중국 진출을 시도해왔으나 번번히 거부당했다.

페이팔은 성명을 통해 "중국에서 온라인 결제 서비스를 제공할 수 있도록 허가받은 최초의 외국 결제 플랫폼이 된 것을 영광으로 생각한다"고 밝혔다.

그동안 중국 결제 시장은 알리페이, 위챗페이 등이 선점해왔다. 페이팔은 이들과 정면 승부를 벌일 계획이다.

페이팔의 영어 공식 명칭은 PayPal Holdings, Inc.이다. 온라인 송금으로 전 세계를 연결하는 미국의 회사이다. 은행 계좌번호나 신용카드 번호의 노출없이 클릭 한 번으로 송금 처리를 완료할 수 있는 서비스를 제공하고 있다.

페이팔은 칸피니티(Confinity)라는 이름으로 1998년 처음 설립됐다.맥스 레브친, 피터 틸, 루크 노섹 그리고 켄 하워리등이 공동 창업했다. 처음에는 모바일 기기의 보안 소프트웨어를 개발하는 회사였다. 블루런 벤처스의 존 말로이에 의해 재원 투자를 받으면서 1999년 페이팔(PayPal)이라는 이름의 송금 서비스를 개발했다. 칸피니티는 2000년 3월 일론 머스크가 창업한 온라인 뱅킹 회사 엑스 닷컴과 합병하였다. 2002년에 기업공개를 하면서 이베이의 자회사가 되었다. 이후 2015년 7월 18일 이베이로부터 분리독립했다.

He has been recognized as one of the top 10 CEOs in the world by Fortune, named one of the top 100 most creative people by Fast Company, and included on the 2017 Recode 100 list of people making the biggest impact on business and technology. He has also been recognized as one of the top 10 most innovative CEOs in banking.

Dan previously served as Group President at American Express. Prior to joining American Express, Dan was President of the Prepaid Group at Sprint Nextel Corporation following its acquisition of Virgin Mobile USA, Inc., where he led the company as its founding CEO for eight years. Earlier in his career, Dan was President and CEO of Priceline Group, Inc., where he led the company through a period of rapid growth and expansion. He also spent 18 years at AT&T, where he held a series of positions, including President of the Consumer Markets Division.

Dan is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves as Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Steering Committee to promote global financial inclusion. He also serves on the World Economic Forum’s Future of the Global Financial System taskforce. In addition, Dan is a board member of Autism Speaks. He also serves on the boards of Verizon, International Ltd. and Symantec Corporation, where he is the Non-Executive Chairman of the Board.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and a Master of Business from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Dan is an avid mixed martial arts practitioner.
