[글로벌이코노믹 김대호 기자] 미국 연방의회에 사상 처음으로 한국계여성이 진출할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

8일 미국 선거관리위원회에 따르면 공화당 소속의 김영 후보 (영어명 Young Kim)가 캘리포니아 주 연방하원 39지구인 노스 오렌지카운티 프라이머리에서 1만8637표를 얻어 1위를 차지했다.
캘리포니아 주 연방하원 39지구의 프라이머리는 민주당과 공화당 등 모든 정당과 무소속 후보가 함께 하는 프라이머리 1위는 사실상 전체 1위인 셈이다.

캘리포니아 주 연방하원 39지구에서는 프라이머리에서 1위를 차지한 후보와 2위 후보가 본선에 올라간다.

이날 개표에서 1위 김영 후보에 이어 2위에는 민주당의 길 시스네로스 후보가 차지했다. 길 시스네로스 후보의 지지율은 19%였다.

1위 김영 후보와 2위 길 시스네로스 후보는 올 11월 본선에서 맞붙는다.

프라이머리 3위를 차지한 리베라토레 후보가 공화당인 점을 감안할때 그에게 쏠린 지지율 14%중 상당수가 같은 공화당인 김영으로 쏠릴 가능성이 있다.

김영의 당선 가능성이 상당히 높은 상태이다.
김영이 당선되면 한국계 여성으로서는 사상 처음으로 연방 의회에 진출하게 된다.

캘리포니아 주 연방하원 39지구는 한인 밀집 지역인 풀러턴이 속해 있는 곳이다.

그동안에는 공화당의 에드 로이스 하원 외교위원장이 선출되어 왔으나 최근 은퇴를 선언했다.

한국인의 미국 연방의회 진출은 26년전 김창준 전 의원이 처음이었다.

영 김 후보는 20여년간 로이스 위원장의 보좌관으로 활동했다.

Young O. Kim (born October 18, 1962) is an American politician who formerly served in the California State Assembly as a Republican representing the 65th Assembly District, encompassing parts of northern Orange County.

She was elected to the Assembly in 2014 after unseating Democratic Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva. In 2016, in turn, Quirk-Silva unseated Kim in a rematch. Prior to being elected to the Assembly, she was the Director of Community Relations and Asian Affairs for Congressman Ed Royce. Kim earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Southern California.

In 2017, Kim announced she would be running for the Orange County Board of Supervisors, a nonpartisan office, in the 4th district, which includes the cities of Fullerton, Placentia, La Habra and Brea, and portions of Anaheim and Buena Park. Kim announced in January 2018, after Royce announced his retirement, that she would instead enter the Congressional race for California's 39th district.
