[글로벌이코노믹 김재희 기자] 미국이 대북 레드라인을 언급하고 나서 주목을 끌고있다.

숀 스파이서 미 백악관 대변인은 한국시간 18일 "트럼프 대통령은 현재 자신의 카드를 조끼에 숨기고 있다"면서 " 어떤 군사적 또는 다른 상황 전개에 대해 자신이 어떻게 대응할지를 미리 떠벌리지 않을 것"이라고 말했다.
이는 북한이 '선'을 넘었다고 판단할 경우 시리아 때처럼 예고 없이 강력한 응징에 나설 것이라는 점을 시사한 것으로 받아들여지고 있다.
레드라인(Red Line)은 미국의 특사였던 윌리엄 제임스 페리가 대북정책과 관련하여 '압박전술 전개'라는 다음 단계로 넘어가는 과정을 명확히 할 필요가 있다면서 제시한 일종의 추가 보복 경계선이다.

레드라인의 사전적 의미는 경계선을 넘는다는 것이다.
영영사전에는 다음과 같이 정의되어 있다. The Red line, or "to cross the red line", is a phrase used worldwide to mean a figurative point of no return or line in the sand, or "a limit past which safety can no longer be guaranteed.

이 말이 처음 언급된 것은 1928년이다.
